Kwai River

The Japs started the construction of the rail bridge over the Kwai River in the year 1942. The total construction took almost 18 months to complete. The bridge was built by the POWs. Different POWs who had been fortunate enough to come back home alive have given numerous descriptions about the hardships they had to face.

Hunger was a constant companion that led to various kinds of illness. These untreated diseases led to death. Many epidemics broke out like Cholera. However, these incidents hardly affected the Jap guards. They only knew one word, 'Speedo'. Those who tried to go against the Japs were either executed or given extreme punishments to set example for other prisoners.
